MWC Innovation Round-up: From flying cars to data transfer via the skin
Beyond the show of the big players #MWC was also great to explore #innovation from upcoming #startups. As every year, it was a true pleasure to invite a select group of entrepreneurs to discuss their innovative use cases and potential business opportunities with DT’s board members Tim Höttges, Claudia Nemat and Dominique Leroy. Next to the widely mediatized “AI Phone”, a prototype for an appless smartphone, enabled by our visionary partner Jerry Yue of Brain Technologies, Inc. there were many more innovations to discover:
- Flying cars (Jim Dukhovny, Alef) and data transfer via human skin (Angik Sarkar, Ixana) were highly inspirational use cases. You might think that this #technology is a bit far out, but in fact it promises to hit the market already by 2025.
- Also, laser-triggered #FusionEnergy (Heike Freund, Marvel Fusion) was visionary and a great example of groundbreaking innovation made and funded in #Europe (by Dr. Hendrik Brandis, Earlybird Venture Capital). Certainly fusion energy could become an important brick in Deutsche Telekom’s long-term energy mix.
- Many innovations surprised with hands-on solutions to drive telcos’ business and customer satisfaction like
- the world’s 1st #AR laptop equipped with AR-glasses instead of a screen to provide a virtual screen size equivalent to 100” (Tomer Kahan, Sightful)
- backhauling for RAN towers with last-mile laser #connectivity at fiber-like speed (Rohit Jha, Transcelestial)
- extending traditional #telecom network coverage with carrier-grade, decentralized 5G-network (Samer Bishay, Karrier One)
- improving #5G indoor connectivity in trains/buildings by making metal-coated windows permeable with laser treatment (Luc Burnier & Jordi Montserrat, nu glass)
- a highly private and secure collaboration app which might have helped to avoid recent wiretapping scandals (Hervé Blanc, SHAREKEY Swiss AG)
- driving #sustainability with decentralized serverless #cloud computing running on outdated smartphones (Alessandro De Carli, Acurast Association)
- Finally at DT’s tech incubator hubraum it was heartwarming to see a #TechForGood use case with haptic materials come to life (Johannes Väänänen, Telehaptics) providing a 7th sense to visually impaired people that allows them to move around independently by using haptic feedback on their forehead.
In summary, we leave MWC loaded up with lots of #inspiration and many concrete business #opportunities. A big thank you goes to Yossi Vardi and Pere Duran for ingesting the 4YFN innovation companies into #MWC2024. It’s important to have events like this to support the European #startup ecosystem. We’ll be back soon to discover the next batch of exciting use cases and companies!

I still remember the day when we invited our visionary partner Jerry Yue (Brain Technologies, Inc.) to discuss the appless world with Tim Höttges and our Board of Management in an Innovation Deep Dive back in 2023 - what an amazing ride since!
Would love to use my AI personal assistant with an app-free interface to order tapas for lunch in Barcelona today, and book my flight back to Germany later this week! Go T!
