✨ Every now and then, you get in touch with a group of people for whom you enter the room, and you can just feel there is a special #spirit and #connection... For the people here in the picture, this was definitely the case!
Thanks to Matthias Arnold, Abdelhakim, Sina Ehresmann, Tim Grosser, Iwas Iwas, Leah Junker, Leonard Klein, Timo Klingler, Felix Lengle, Jesse Linsangan, Lea Neuweger, Zeni Sulejmani, Janos Szabo (PMP, Prince 2, LPM), Lukas Watanabe, Lukas Weiss, Sebastian Zeis, Yimin Zhou, Xiaoda Chen, and Julian Shaun Tristram for the energy you brought to the Düsseldorf campus. Aspecial shout-out to Florian H.; we all look forward to your pizza after hearing your #charisma speech! 🍕
The group is part of our WHU Global Online MBA - a program combining the flexibility of remote learning and case studies with our unique network and the benefits of in-person connections. To ensure the latter, the otherwise virtual program has one onsite touchpoint: our residential week! With the support of Hannah Baum, it is a wonderful part of my job to teach the two-day #Leadership #Essentials course during this week.... and now hand over to Jürgen Weigand!
While there is a general structure, the course is each time a bit different as we tailor it to the interest of each group. This time, we spent a considerable time discussing... 💡 #Onsite vs. #remote work: Research shows that remote work spreads contagiously - but is this necessarily bad? Recent meta-analytic findings indicate that remote work intensity is slightly positive for most outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction, performance); yet, the biggest challenge is ensuring social connections & avoiding loneliness. Maybe it's not all about the directly measurable productivity - the more indirect informal connections can also come in handy... I expect this debate to continue with more #AI entering the workplace! 💡 #Meeting overload: We discussed quite some #evidence about how meetings are mostly ineffective, including a cool analysis by Hancheng Cao offering a "Large scale analysis of multitasking behavior during remote meetings". Joe Allen will absolutely feel the question one participant asked after a while: "Why are organizations not acting based on all the evidence that is out there?"
This is a very good question. And honestly, I don't really know the answer. Whatever your job is - I am pretty sure there is some #research that could be applied to your job and would make it better. Yes, there is Google, but there is also Google Scholar...
💫 So if you leave this post with just one thought, let it be this one: How can I find at least one regular touchpoint to stay up-to-date with some research findings concerning an area I am interested in? 💫
This could be identifying a newsletter, following a scholar who regularly posts here on LinkedIn, signing up for an evidence-based practicioner journal, scheduling a research hour once a month.... I don't care what it is, just go for it!
🤓 Looking for some #inspiration and out-of-the-box thinking? 🤓
This week, many management scholars from all over the world make their way to #Chicago for the Academy of Management Conference. My personal recommendations are the so-called "Professional Development Workshops" (#PDWs) offered on Friday and Saturday and of course, the receptions (🔎 @AoMParties on X to get an overview)
Do you want to #catchup?
