I just looked at info on an event I was considering attending. It was local to me, covered topics I would like better perspective on. I looked deeper at the speakers, to gauge my interest in their perspectives.
There were 47 speakers; 6 Asian men, 2 white women, and 39 white men. I’ve had great white male leaders in my life, white men aren’t on the chopping block. This was a quick immediate no on the event though.
Information is public, it’s everywhere, it’s immediate. Learning is available. The benefit of connecting with people comes from the perspective and creative thinking, not a dissemination of specific knowledge. To find a dynamic solution or result, solicit varied perspectives; all white men don’t share perspective either, I understand it’s a complex problem.
If you’re thinking “the selected speakers were just the leaders in their fields and you would be biased to not choose them”, make the logical leap to see a deficiency in hiring and promotion structures. That is not a demographic representation of any set of skills, perspectives, or talents to achieve dynamic success today.
I hope we keep working for a mindset of problem solving and learn to move past what has been normal and into the advantage of the world we live in and it’s incredible people! 💪🏻💞🔥
