"Nonviolent Communication" is an incredibly useful book. Thanks to Artem Petakov, co-founder at Noom, for recommending it to me recently. This book is definitely worth a read to anyone who wants to improve their EQ, empathy, and/or communication skills for ANY human to human interaction.
Here are just a couple snippets:
"Non-violent communication is designed for those of us who would like others to change and respond, only when they can do so willingly and compassionately. The objective of non-violent communication is to establish a relationship based on honesty and empathy."
"To whatever degree people hear blame, they fail to hear the person's pain."
"Sometimes we are simply not conscious of what we are requesting when we speak...without knowing how to engage in a dialogue with them...In such situations, the listener, without discerning a clear request in the speakers words, experiences distress."
"Choosing to request rather than demand does not mean we give up when someone says no. It does mean that we do not engage in persuasion until we have empathized with what's preventing the other person from saying yes...Expressing genuine requests requires an awareness of our objective. If our objective is to only change people and their behavior and get our way, then non-violent communication is not the appropriate tool."
"As listeners, we don't need insight into psychological dynamics ot training in psychotherapy. What is essential is our ability to be present and [open] other person's feelings and needs they are experiencing at that very moment."
