Failures are part of our success!
I was impacted recently by this inspiring L'Oréal campaign that encourages women to share their “worth it resumes”, the milestones in their (professional) lives that may have been seen as failures when they happened, but that, in the end, contributed to where they are now (thanks for sharing it Ines Caldeira). As I started to reflect on my journey, I realized how true this is: the twists and turns that shaped my professional life made me a better marketeer.
So, here’s my Worth It Resume:
📝 Didn’t get the job I dreamed of when I was a kid: I always said I wanted to be a journalist, ever since I was a kid. Not a doctor, not an astronaut, a journalist. I wanted to chase stories and expose mysteries (maybe what I really wanted was to be a private detective). However, when I got to uni, I was confronted with the fact that most reporters don’t do investigative journalism…and that maybe I was a bit too introverted for that job, anyway. Realizing the job you dreamed of for so long isn’t for you can be paralyzing. But instead of feeling lost, I ended up exploring a professional field that relies even more on “investigation” (if you want to know what customers really want, you must dig deep) and it turned out to be my true passion.
➕ Struggled with Math: I’m a social sciences girl, always were. I love books, I hated math. Until I decided to get into strategy, where data is queen, and to do an MBA, where I had accounting, finance and other subjects where I was so out of my comfort zone. In the end, through hard work and dedication, I ended up being a top student at my MBA and now there’s nothing I love more than to crack a good excel filled with relevant data!
🔄 Delayed Entry into Marketing: My path into marketing wasn't linear. Before getting a proper experience in actual marketing, I had experiences in public relations and advertising. Then I did a bit of digital marketing before getting my full-on first marketing manager role. Even though I feel like I took the scenic route to where I am now, I know I’m a better professional because of it. Every experience helped me had a deeper understanding of every touchpoint, every channel, every tactic that makes up a 360-marketing campaign. 🚗 Failed Driver’s License Exam Twice: On a more personal note, I had to take the driver’s license exam 3 times. Yes, 3! There’s no silver lining on this one, apart from the fact that, ‘til this day, I’m aware that the world is better off without me driving a car! ;)
