What do you want to be when you grow up?
GCSE results day has led to me to reflect on my secondary school experience, the choices I made and the careers advice I was given.
I went to an amazing comprehensive school on the west coast of Scotland in the 1980s. The teaching provision was excellent and the extra-curricular activities second to none. I was in the debating society, brass band, drama club and choir to name but a few. I feel incredibly lucky to have received such a well-rounded education that offered so many opportunities both in and out of the classroom.
Perhaps it was a 1980’s thing, but the careers advice we got was bit thin in comparison to the quality of the rest of the education on offer. The only career options presented to us seemed to be teaching, nursing or law. Nothing wrong with any of those of course, but seriously, was that it back then?!
I remember wanting to do Secretarial Studies as an exam subject as I thought typing would be a useful skill to have (I planned to be an actress and the ability to type would be useful for when I was ‘resting’!) Apparently, I was ‘too bright’ to do typing and I should do something more academic.
I didn’t become an actress, a teacher, a lawyer or a nurse. Instead, I’ve been a tour guide, a marketing officer, an administrator for a dance company, a cleaner, and a PA. I’ve stuffed envelopes for a trade union and delivered electoral register forms. I’ve ‘retrained’ twice (massage therapist and then as a coach) and I taught myself to touch type!
Mine has not been a linear career and I don’t think any career guidance counsellor would have suggested or advised the route I’ve taken. Some of what I’ve done has been driven by financial need (cleaner, electoral register forms, envelope stuffing) but everything else has been driven by my values and working for organisations or industries that I was passionate about.
Finding what makes your heart sing and that gets you out of bed in the morning with a spring in your step matters. Once you find it you know.
I LOVE working as a coach but if I was to consider retraining AGAIN it would be either as a sports psychologist, osteopath or a gardener!
What did you want to do when you were at school? What career path did you take? Does it make your heart sing?
As a coach I work with people looking to reconnect with what matters to them in their careers and find the job that makes their heart sing and give them a spring in their step. If you’re planning a change in direction and not sure where to turn, let’s have a conversation.

On one of my walks earlier this year I spotted a tree that had been blown over in a storm. For months it lay there looking bare and not showing any sign of recovery.
I walked past it again yesterday and noticed it was covered in new growth. The power of nature never ceases to amaze.
Throughout our lives we encounter setbacks that interrupt our progress. Perhaps you didn’t get that promotion you applied for or nail that all-important contract you were banking on to meet your monthly sales target. Maybe it was a team presentation where you’d hoped to impress that didn’t go as well as you’d hoped. One minor knock can be easy to bounce back from, but a series of setbacks can make it difficult to get back on track. You feel defeated, bruised, unsure where to go next or what strategy to try.
The Co-Active Training Institute where I initially trained assert that:
“People are, by their very nature, creative, resourceful and whole. They are capable: capable of finding answers; capable of choosing, capable of taking action; capable of recovering when things don’t go as planned; and especially, capable of learning.”
As a coach it is my job to see the creative, resourceful and whole person that I’m working with and remind them of their capability.
Just like this tree, we all have the capability to recover when things don’t go as planned.
Working with a coach helps you find the clarity, new direction, awareness and growth required to lift you up again after being knocked down.
If you’ve faced a setback recently, let's have a conversation about your capabilities and see what’s possible for you.
