I was back at West Point last week and among other things, I had the chance to be back in the classroom and teach a class to cadets (I’m a visiting lecturer in the West Point Department of Law).
The cadets were astounding and attentive, as always, despite it being their last day of classes before term ends (and, for many, a few weeks before tossing their caps in the air for graduation).
Throughout my visit, I had a chance to talk to a number of cadets, staff, and faculty about Generative AI.
Those discussions mirrored many I’ve had with others involved in Higher Education, where educators and students were both grappling with how to responsibly incorporate AI into the classroom and classwork.
One professor I spoke with had gone beyond thinking about it. He allowed his class to use any Generative AI tool they wanted for their written final as long as they disclosed it. The result was illuminating:

The worst performing group used AI to generate their paper, then submitted it without any further review or editing.

The middle group did not use AI at all. Their results varied widely but were generally better than the first group that used AI without editing. However, they did not perform as well as the third group.

The best performing group used AI to assist in writing their paper, but then carefully reviewed, edited and finalized the work themselves before submitting it. This group consistently had the highest quality papers.
