Frances S Lai is an accomplished R&D manager with extensive experience in leading staff and projects focused on developing innovative technologies for drug discovery and life sciences research.
With a robust background in both industrial and academic research, Frances has accumulated an impressive track record of 15 patents and 39 journal publications. Her exceptional contributions to the field were recognized when she was honored with the 2002 National Women of Color Technology Award in Research Leadership.
Frances's expertise spans across various domains, including molecular genetics, cancer research, microarrays, and cell culture/assay tools. She excels in initiating and advancing new technologies for life sciences and possesses hands-on experience in creating novel assays and technologies for drug discovery.
In addition to her technical proficiency, Frances is known for her exceptional leadership skills, project and people management abilities, as well as her strong organizational and communication capabilities.
Her technical repertoire includes a wide array of capabilities such as molecular cloning, DNA & protein microarrays, PCR, gene expression analysis, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, Southern/Western blotting, immunoassays, cell culture techniques, magnetic beads-based assays, cancer genetics and diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, and drug discovery processes.
Complementing her technical acumen, Frances also has a wealth of management experience encompassing research and development, staff and project management, project stage transfers, budget planning, stakeholder communications, as well as research agreement negotiation and execution.
Frances S Lai holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular Genetics from Fudan University and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology from Zhejiang University. Throughout her career, she has held various key positions including the VP of R&D at Ohmx Corporation, Consultant at Sword Diagnostics, Inc., Research Manager at Corning Incorporated, Research Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, Research Associate/Visiting Scientist at The Wistar Institute, Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Texas at Austin, and Postdoctoral Fellow at Virginia Tech.
