🔔 #BiogenicCarbon for #greenhydrogen derivatives. Free article here: https://lnkd.in/e_qrhXFs. While most of the discussion around green hydrogen derivatives, -#methanol, #kerosene, #ammonia / #urea, etc.- has focused on the availability of #renewableelectricity to produce hydrogen from water #electrolysis, not the same level of attention has been given to sourcing the other molecule needed for their production: Carbon.   💡 This free article from Energy Post shares insights from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on the uncertainty around how much carbon will be demanded, how much will be available to be supplied, and from which sources to be aligned with a #NetZero Carbon energy scenario.   🔍 With different options to source carbon -from fossil industries or #DAC-, it’s getting clearer that due to costs and environmental benefits biogenic carbon would be the preferred source. But the scarcity of biogenic #CO2 means that more detailed assessments of existing and potentially future sources are required with a regional and country focus.

💰Governments may consider new business opportunities for existing and future #bioindustries -#pulpandpaper, beverages, sugar, #biogas, etc.- , to become suppliers of carbon in integrated bio- + #efuels and #chemicals. Consider technologies known as Power and #Biomass to Liquid (#PBtL) or e-biofuels, allow for higher yields and efficiencies of Biomass-to-Liquid (#BTL) plants by injecting renewable hydrogen in the process. Many other aspects require attention as well, infrastructure, sustainability, #certification, transporting #CO2 or ship higher value-added products such as synthetic #sustainablefuels .   ⚡ Direct renewable #electrification clearly is the main pathway to #decarbonise the global energy demand. However, a deeper understanding of the aspects discussed in this article is crucial to inform policy decisions concerning a #greenhydrogen economy for those sectors that are yet hard to directly electrify.   👏 Kudos to my colleagues who authored this article Arno van den Bos (lead author), Karan Kochhar and Luis Janeiro, which comes very timely to inform the discussion around this important matter.   Roland Roesch , #electrification , #hydrogen #renewableenergy , #energytransition #3xrenewables , Arasan Aruliah Paul Durrant Alberto Jr Pela Marie Schippers Chun Sheng Goh Boyoung Kang Kendall Esmeijer Areti Ntaradimou Juan Manuel Salazar Gómez Maryna Hritsyshyna Magnolia Tovar Monica Gasca Rojas Tambi Issac Ambrosio Yobánolo del Real Rana Humbatova Andres Almonacid Daniela Morales Soler Martijn Graaff, de Dolf Gielen Jorge Arturo Pulido Pérez José Rodrigo Gómez Díaz Thomas Black - Arbeláez Jose Lenin Morillo Carrillo Laura Calderón G Thiago Barral Dietram Oppelt Tobias Rinke Ariesta Ningrum Svetlana Chobanova Nicholas Wagner Joana Argemí Ribalta Jaitika Dhir Gregory Dolan
