I am deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of my father, Placido D’Souza. To most, he was a nation-builder, diplomat, writer, artist and journalist. To me, he was dad — a towering personality in my life.
When I was 14 years old, he encouraged me to learn about the new ‘gadget called a Personal Computer’ that he’d read about in the newspaper. He later went on to buy me a Commodore 64 on which I first cut my teeth as a programmer.
Years later when I was admitted to graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University but could not afford the tuition, my father stepped in to make it possible for me to attend.
My love of computers and the time I spent at CMU were two critical factors that changed the trajectory of my life. There are countless other examples of times he encouraged, cajoled and pushed me to set my sights ever higher. I’ll miss him greatly. May he rest in peace.
