Want tips to market to developers? Peggy Rayzis, Sr Director of Developer Experience at Apollo GraphQL, led a great discussion about #Marketing to #developers with our group of Product-led Leaders. Four takeaways:

1️⃣ SWEAT THE NEW DEV EXPERIENCE Sweat the details. Provide a frictionless DevX and impress from the first moments:

  • make sure the docs are GREAT: feature code, show step by step. Measure their CSAT. Keep them up to date.
  • nail demos: the Twilio team rehearsed their 5-min demo again and again. And again. They told a story and showed how easy it is to use Twilio.
  • link to repos and frameworks devs can use
  • measure new user NPS, get feedback, iterate, repeat

2️⃣ EDUCATE & SUPPORT. ALWAYS Almost all your energy should go to showing what's possible with your product and how to use it. Apollo created Odyssey, their online courses about GraphQL, Apollo and scaling it in the enterprise. Drives > 10% of signups. Courses are ungated and free (with devs, ungate as much as possible). Exception: experimenting with gated courses for enterprise customers, which drive great quality leads.

Use humans to support, teach and point to the right resources or next steps; NEVER sell. For devs, who spend so much time in online communities, getting a vote of confidence from their peers is critical for a new product (refer back to point 1 about DevX). So be helpful and answer Q's there (StackOverflow, Reddit, HN, etc.), even if it's not about your product.

3️⃣ WEBSITE: SHOW HOW IT WORKS Why do devs often go straight to your docs (and then pricing page) on your site? Because they want to :

  • know what the product does and how it works. That's often the only place that explains that in plain English :-/
  • get started with your product ASAP
  • they go to pricing to see if they can prototype right away, for free or with a credit card, and without getting hit with astronomical bills

On your other pages, esp. your home:

  • show don't tell: sweat product screenshots or illustrations
  • be specific. Use concrete language and no business or marketing jargon. Use benefit-oriented copy sparingly

See the example (main image of this post) of the interactive module on Apollo's new home. It's one of the sections devs spend the most time with on the page.

Want a stand-out website? Stop copying linear.app,  with a dark background and purple shades. Don't get me wrong, it looks great. But check out Peggy's brand-new Apollo website: https://lnkd.in/gmKvnXuk

4️⃣  LET YOUR DEVX TEAM DO MORE: They get developers, know how to engage them and, unless you have technical Product Marketers or Brand leads (we did at Twilio), they can redefine BOTH the brand platform and lead the website redesign, like Peggy at Apollo. They can also co-lead PLG with the product team.
