FRIENDS -- I am part of an advocacy effort seeking a Presidential clemency order for Lisa Montgomery, whose story is horrible. We are organizing a set of supporting letters from various influential communities, including ex-prosecutors and child advocates. This is a federal case from Missouri, but only the President can help, so the team is reaching out to a diverse national community. I hope you might consider joining us in “signing on” to the child advocates’ letter in either your individual or organizational capacity – we will include both lawyers and colleague professionals, child and family advocates, directors, supervisors, “line staff” advocates and pro bono volunteers. The matter is most urgent, as Ms. Montgomery is scheduled to be executed on December 8. I am glad to discuss as needed over the weekend or early next week, and to provide such additional information as you may need. On Tuesday night I delivered some kindly-donated Whole Foods meals to families whom we serve in North Philadelphia. My route took me to 29th Street and Allegheny Avenue, to the neighborhood and corner where I was born 60 years ago.
What a special place we inhabit. We get to be in the lives of families who need us, families who are living in homes exactly like the one I lived in, families who are each on their own challenging and hopeful journey. We get to extend the kindness of our friends—whether the donors who make our work possible, or the companies and employees at places like Atlas Energy who provided the meals this week, or the hundreds who participate in our Toy Drive—into stories and lives they wouldn’t otherwise much get to meet. Together we get to make a difference. What a gift all that is!
