It's hard work not working hard…
Or so I found out over the last 3 months while on paternity leave.
While it was 1000% the most special time bonding with my wife and the two lil guys… I found that it took a lot of focus to be truly present and not constantly thinking about the team, our clients or checking slack every 15 minutes.
I did finally figure it out and I learned some new tactics to help me put work down when it is “family time."
Here are some tips for taking leave, vacations or disconnecting after hours:
- Make your phone dumb when home: consider an app subscription like Opal or a device like Brick (https://getbrick.app/) to disable Slack, work emails, social media, etc., when it is time to focus on the family, disconnect for a walk, or do a social detox.
- Better yet, if it’s in the cards, get a dedicated work phone: This was new for me, and it is a nice way to physically delineate between work time and home time. No work email/slack on the personal and no social or fun apps on the work device.
- OOO buddy: Nominate a colleague to be your client and team’s main POC if/when you are absolutely needed.
- Schedule time for sneak peeks: If looking at email/slack quickly will put you at ease (which it did for me) schedule a time block to step into your work and efficiently run through work items, potentially with your “OOO buddy.”
- Trust the team: Be confident knowing that you are surrounded by the right people. They’ve got this.
As a leader, I also recognize my role in creating a supportive and empathetic culture that empowers the team to fully disconnect during their personal time. Unplugging in our industry is not an easy task, and I’m committed to providing the team with the tools to help them flourish.
I am so thankful for the experience and appreciative to my team for giving me the space to bond with my babies. And now I’m stoked to dive back in with the team and our clients.
So hit me up with a brief or just to catch up! I’m ready for some adult convos!
