AI in the PM role: friend or foe?

In my last post I talked about the benefits AI can bring to Project Management. The referenced Harvard Business Review article talks about the ‘disruptions’ AI will have to the PM world. One of the key disruptions (and for us PMs the most impactful) is how it will impact our roles. The following excerpt comes from this article:

“A new role for the project manager For many project managers, automating a significant part of their current tasks may feel scary, but successful ones will learn to use these tools to their advantage. Project managers will not be going away, but they will need to embrace these changes and take advantage of the new technologies. We currently think of cross-functional project teams as a group of individuals, but we may soon think of them as a group of humans and robots.

With a shift away from administrative work, the project manager of the future will need to cultivate strong soft skills, leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, and business acumen. They must focus on the delivery of the expected benefits and their alignment with strategic goals. They will also need a good understanding of these technologies. Some organizations are already building AI into their project management education and certification programs, and Northeastern University is incorporating AI into its curriculum, teaching project managers how to use AI to automate and improve data sets and optimize investment value from projects.”

PMs of the future will be valued for their soft skills, leadership and business acumen. The focus will be much more on strategy rather than tactical, emphasizing benefits realization and value-add to the organization.

As PMs we learn to adapt to new technologies and new ways of doing things. It should not be a scary proposition, but rather another opportunity in this ever-changing digital world. Let’s take full advantage of the new paradigm of AI, and embrace change just like we have done so many times in the past.

How can Project Management benefit from AI?

Much has been said about the benefits of AI, and how it will transform our society. As a PM, I wonder what true impact Artificial Intelligence will have on Project Management. So I asked my ‘AI bot’ this same question. Here is what I got: “Project Management can benefit from AI in many ways, such as: ·        Improving project selection and prioritization by using AI to analyze data from past and current projects, and to forecast the expected outcomes, risks, and benefits of each potential project. ·        Enhancing project monitoring and reporting by using AI to track the progress, performance, and quality of each project, and to generate timely and accurate reports for stakeholders. ·        Automating administrative tasks by using AI chatbots, virtual assistants, and knowledge-based systems to handle routine and repetitive tasks such as scheduling meetings, sending reminders, updating documents, and providing information. ·        Facilitating testing and quality assurance by using AI to detect errors, bugs, and defects in the project deliverables, and to suggest solutions or improvements. ·        Supporting decision making and problem solving by using AI to provide insights, recommendations, and guidance based on data analysis, best practices, and lessons learned from previous projects.

AI can help IT Project Managers to focus more on the strategic aspects of their projects, such as coaching their teams, managing stakeholder expectations, and delivering value to their customers. AI can also help IT Project Managers to improve their skills, knowledge, and creativity by learning from the data and feedback generated by the AI systems.”

There is a great article from Harvard Business Review that talks about these same benefits, I’d highly recommend the read - How AI Will Transform Project Management (hbr.org)

What has been your experience so far, have you leveraged AI in managing your projects? What is your take on the future of AI in project management?
