The aftermath.

50 miles, 22 hours, a sunset, a sunrise, 8 protein shakes, 3 Krispy Kreme donuts, liter of pickle juice, half a dozen blisters, and 120K steps later, we were greeted by a few hundred of Nebraska’s finest Americans in Omaha. It was actually pretty tough, and I’m proud to have finished the march with about a hundred other tough-as-nails marchers ranging from an 8yo to a 76yo!

John Berry, Ryan Hendrickson and I were in awe of all the patriotism and reverence the community showed for our men and women in uniform. It was a site to see and a moment to remember. Jay Miralles and Brianne Schuler, MPA you guys did a spectacular job coordinating and leading the way.

I want to thank the 50 Mile March Foundation team and the amazing support of the dozens on “hospitality team” who supported all the marchers at every stop — from filling our water bladders to feeding us electrolytes to caring for and massaging our feet!! They were invaluable. Consider visiting their site and spreading the word.

In particular, I want to thank Elizabeth Armatys from the Berry Law team for being such an amazing caretaker, volunteering her time and resources to take care of us three. And thanks to Bob Musilek for giving us the lift down to Lincoln!

Lots of veterans lose their sense of self and purpose as they transition to civilian life, but if you continue engaging with the community and surround yourself with patriots, you will recall the why of your service. It never goes away. Sometimes you need to do a few “hard things” to remember and appreciate.

God bless America.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to attend the Army Navy game and join in on the festivities. One moment, however, jumps out at me as a really special moment to recall.

Paul Tanghe and Dennis Eóghan Clancey had sent out texts for folks to meet up during the half and hug Cecilia Pena, the mother to our classmate Paul Pena, who died in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, 19 JAN 2010.

A diminutive lady, Ms. Pena reached up and gave each of us a hug and asked us how we knew Paul. We shared some tears, laughter, and a pretty cool photo at the end. It was special how we got to remember our friend, during our "Old Grad" get-togethers.

This year, Cecilia also got to join the Travis Manion Foundation to work with the #TheAlaskaProject as well. These are the words of Mark C. Weaver, PMP -- from the The 98 Fund.

"I already knew she was amazing from Cory Wallace, and we shared her 'madre' name with the group. She is small but her impact is powerful.

She hiked Gold Star Peak [in Alaska], one step at a time never quitting and with a determination that inspired those near her. At the top, she honored Paul with his dog tag and a rock, and she made it down the mountain step by step, and sliding on her butt 6” at a time… never complaining. We were on the mountain 13 1/2 hours (9am till 10:30pm)."

This is one of the reasons I joined Strong Gray Line earlier this year.

This is also why we decided to host a tailgate at the Army Navy game this year.

We want the opportunity for folks (from all classes) to reunite and remember.

If you're in Philly around a month from now, December 10th, 2022, we'd love to see you there. Please RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/e8cvwAeu

Thank you to Charlsey Mahle and Haley Uthlaut for making this happen!
