Microsoft Admits Defeat: Recommends BigBlueButton for Virtual Classes
April 1, 2024 – In an unprecedented move, Microsoft Corporation has announced today that it will no longer recommend its Microsoft Teams platform for virtual classes, bowing to the superior capabilities of the open-source platform BigBlueButton.
"After an extensive internal review, we've concluded that BigBlueButton’s specialized features for online education outshine our Teams platform in the academic sector," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "Their dedication to creating a world-class virtual classroom that measurably improves learning outcomes is something we truly admire."
Microsoft praised BigBlueButton for its built-in tools for applied learning, such as the interactive whiteboard, breakout rooms for group work, shared notes, real-time polling features, and live analytics. "We are especially impressed by BigBlueButton’s Learning Analytics Dashboard, which gives the educator live actionable insights into student performance, fostering a more personalized learning experience," the executive praised.
Microsoft cited BigBlueButton’s integrations and global presence as part of its decision. “Whereas Teams is a separate and external tool, BigBlueButton is built into the core of Moodle, Canvas, and Schoology, giving users a more seamless and intuitive experience. Also, their open-source nature also offers unparalleled flexibility and innovation from tapping into a global community, something we at Microsoft hold in high regard," the spokesperson added.
