INTRODUCING AWSM SCTY: Ecstatic to announce an effort/labor of love we’ve been working on for sometime now even before the attacks on diversity began to proliferate.
🏗 When I embarked on building AWSM (“awesome”) as a design-first venture studio combined with an extraordinary diverse talent accelerator focused on creating companies of the future, I had no idea what laid in store.
🎢 Being on the rollercoaster called "learning + life" for the past two years, one of the biggest takeaways I've had is that as a community of color in tech even though grossly underfunded and marginalized at times we’re still capable of generating AND capturing real value despite all those realities.
When evaluating ourselves as a team we wondered how could we scale and maintain our own impact, which led to questions like…
- “How do we maintain a high value, sustainable diverse tech ecosystem?”
- “How might we open source the skills, make them accessible as possible focusing across the stack on 3 dimensions along role, skill and identity dimensions?”
- “What if we shifted how we looked at the 1% VC investment problem and focused on amplifying what we do we have, and what we could build if better networked?”
and lastly…
- “What could we create to help get at this value in a consistent, holistic high-quality way?”
Well, that creation is called AWSM SCTY (“awesome society”) focused on a providing a continuous, place-based point of connection for high-quality venture building & scaling activity across the innovation stack embracing not only founders, pre-founders and investors but the academics, & executives.
This will look like 3 things:
💡 INSPIRING: Virtual AMAs with key players in the industry providing input on how to successfully build the future in the present
🔊 AMPLIFYING: Hosting IRL convenings to improve peer-based problem solving, showcase companies and hear from luminaries in the Black/Brown tech ecosystem that more people should know
💪🏾 ENABLING: This means peer-to-peer mentorships, venture scaling bootcamps and intensives on key topics (product ownership, team dev, board mgmt, etc.)
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big systems thinker and believe the only way to confront an existing system is to create another one with equal value.
