With school starting next Tuesday, I am starting my 53rd year. I still have much to learn. (But I got a new lunchbox. Speed Racer rules.)

One of my few certainties is that broadcast marketing doesn't work anymore. Start an informed/researched dialog with us, or lose our interest.

And your surveillance capital algorithms? They suck. I am a seed investor and novelist. I search the world for new learnings—the wild, unrealized and exceptional. You serve adverts based on that and it's annoying as it's typically weeks later than my momentary explorations.

And you're spending money on influencers? Silly. Most of you can’t track that spend/ROI (unless you are using CreatorCore).

And don’t even get me started on your greenwashing attempts. People? If you are seeing companies use carbon offsets, know that they are scamming us all by perpetuating the problem. Offsets are often used as a way for companies to continue polluting without addressing the root cause of emissions. This "license to pollute" mentality undermines genuine efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. Clearly, they are delaying real action. Offsets delay the necessary systemic changes required to combat climate crisis. It's crucial to focus on reducing emissions at the source. The most significant challenge to carbon credits is the lack of transparency and verification. It is nearly impossible to verify the actual carbon reduction achieved by offset projects. “Ghost credits" or projects that overestimate their impact lead to a false sense of environmental progress.

If you cannot measure something, you really aren’t managing it. If you can’t manage it, you aren’t creating value. There endeth my rant for the day. What are you hoping to learn this new school year? Any new lunchboxes?

The victory of an unrestored Bugatti at the Pebble Beach Concours yesterday, particularly as the first "preservation class" winner, underscores the importance of recognizing and preserving the unique qualities that define an entity's essence. For startups, this isn't about balancing tradition with innovation—it's about safeguarding the distinctive vision, values, and culture that founders bring, even as the company rapidly iterates and evolves.

Startups can learn that while it's essential to move quickly in product and technology development, maintaining the unique and compelling aspects of the company’s culture is just as crucial. Companies like Looker and Patagonia exemplify this balance. Looker (prior to being acquired by Google) continually innovated its platform to meet new demands, yet it consistently upheld its culture of belonging and openness, which is deeply rooted in its mission. Similarly, Patagonia has rapidly expanded its product lines and embraced cutting-edge sustainable technologies, all while staying true to its core values of environmental responsibility and ethical practices.

These examples show that preserving a unique and special culture can coexist with fast-paced innovation, leading to sustainable success.
