I don’t feel particularly comfortable sharing this in the professional space of Linkedin, but since recently being on the Weird Growth Podcast with Cam Sinclair I’ve received a number of questions regarding ultra-running, why I do it and what my next event is. So here goes: For those that know me, I’ve always been a runner, and in the last few years - an Ultra Runner. All that means is that I “run” distances longer than a marathon (there is plenty of walking involved). Next week I’m embarking on the longest “run” I've ever done. The event is called Delirious West and it’s officially called a 200 miler. (though its actually closer to 340km) It starts in Northcliffe, and follows the Bibbulmun Track to finish in Albany, Western Australia. As with all ultra running events, the longer they are, the less they become about a race, and more about a group of people striving to reach the same goal. To simply finish. People often ask me why do I do these events. I don’t do them to raise money for a cause, or for any kind of competition win.
These events test my resilience to the core. They take me to a place of discomfort so great, where my body and mind are screaming at me to just stop, that the very idea of finishing feels completely unreachable. And then I need to fight my way through that dark place, and somehow find a way to finish anyway. Then everything that comes from persevering despite it seeming impossible makes it all worth it. It’s like building a business, a project, or just life in general with all its ups and downs, condensed into a crazy few days of intensity/insanity. So I do these events because they are hard - and success is not guaranteed. They are frightening, exciting and a whole bunch of other emotions. And to spend a few days with the people in the ultra-running community, and of course my amazing family and crew who do so much for me, is just incredible. I think the Race Directors words below sum up pretty well what Ultra-running is about. “Delirious can be looked at as intimidating, impassable, out of your league. But it is not. It is one bloody big adventure where cut offs are (almost) out of the question as we are as generous as we can be. Delirious is 200 miles shared with snakes in their absolute wild, mates in their element and experiencing human kind at its absolute best when you come across trail angels at iconic aid stations (aka volunteers). Let your heart beat to the drum of Delirious. You’ll know what this means if you’ve allowed this before. Slow down your breathing, don’t overthink things and rest assured that EVERY SINGLE PERSON you meet at Delirious, will bend heaven and earth to help you get to that finish line. One aid station at a time. And as much as that feeling at the finish line will be a whole new emotion for those yet to experience it, I PROMISE YOU, the feelings that follow the days, the weeks, the months and years forever after, will be an even greater experience.”
