For 3 years our team has been building.

As a CTO and Founder, it’s pretty special to witness our product being deployed throughout the world.

Before starting Skye, I primarily worked on systems without external users. The shift to building a user-facing product has been a steep learning curve, much of which has been self-taught and figured out as we go. The following learnings are key takeaways that have been critical to our product development journey.

From an engineering perspective, the primary areas I've had to build expertise in have been system architecture, leveraging cloud technologies, external APIs, and front-end development. Technical documentation is vast, and existing solutions are readily available for every problem. Building vs. buying is a common consideration when time-to-market and engineering resources are primary constraints.

From a product perspective, I've learned a lot from Tony L., our CPO. A simplified version of our process is ideate -> synthesize -> design -> build -> iterate. We're constantly discussing precise requirements, prioritizing features, and making decisions around scope and viability. We interview our users to ensure we're building exactly what they need. We respond swiftly to their issues and incorporate their feedback whenever possible.

As product makers, our users inspire us to build things that matter to them and it's our responsibility to deliver. While I'm still learning exactly how to do that, it has been rewarding to see the progress and learnings we've experienced along the way.

I became a working parent on Mar 2, 2023. Some reflections almost 1 year in:

Starting a family while running a startup has been tough, even with a highly supportive and capable partner in Nora and a relatively low-maintenance baby. I also benefit from the support of our entire team at Skye and the ability to set my own schedule. Still, it has felt like raising 2 babies at once, with hard work, lost sleep, and chaotic upheaval coming from all directions.

Parental leave in the US is a problem. Nora only got 6 weeks, which was barely enough time for her to physically recover. I was able to take a little time off as well, and by staggering leave, we were able to get more coverage. Our parents were a vital resource. It's hard when you don't all live in the same place, but we had their help for 3 months postpartum, which was also staggered across both sides of the family.

9-5 are critical hours for parents. We currently only have childcare coverage during those hours, so efficiency during the workday is crucial. While I don't currently commute, factoring that in means even shorter true working hours for those who do. If there's gas in the tank after bedtime, 7:30-midnight can be a productive time too. Once we make it to the weekend, the real work of full-time parenting begins.

Staying social is a luxury. I'm grateful for the friends we've been able to have playdates with, and our childless friends who are willing to visit us and spend time with us on our schedule.

Despite these obstacles, I feel incredibly blessed to be in this position. These days, life feels like it has settled into a new normal, but I'm sure there will be more transitions on the horizon. While we're deficient in time and sleep, we're abundant in purpose.
