Content Strategist for The MTV Staying Alive Foundation May 2018 – July 2019

MTV Staying Alive Foundation (SAF) is the global HIV awareness and campaigning arm of MTV and its parent company, Viacom. One of its most extensive campaigns is MTV Shuga, a TV drama complemented by online, social media, radio, and on-the-ground events aimed at young people aged 15 – 24.

I was hired to collaborate with an exceptional team in the UK led by Richard Chang-Warburton and Esther Kissiedu and a department led by Georgia Arnold and Sara Piot.

My brief included:

  • Delivering a digital strategy to transition from one campaign in one country to simultaneous global campaigns.
  • Developing a brand and visual language that allows multiple campaigns to work together
  • Developing a global digital team structure to deliver simultaneous campaigns and explore new platforms and technologies to ensure MTV Shuga leads digital innovation.

The phases of my work included:

  • Reviewing social, digital, and mobile content – output, engagement, and relatability with the audience.
  • Delivering a digital strategy and platform for multiple campaigns.
  • Develop an analytics framework and data strategy for campaigns.
  • Developing a model for rolling out new campaigns in each market/territory.

I led a tender process to identify UK partners to deliver this global platform and managed the platform's build and delivery. We devised a new UX experience for all online properties, focused on ensuring the audience could access the information they needed across multiple platforms in a timely and easily accessible manner. We managed user focus groups in Africa and used the data to inform our design.

The second part of my work at MTV SAF was to lead the digital elements of the launch of MTV Nishedh in India, the first campaign on this continent. I was tasked with delivering a digital strategy for this vast and diverse audience and leading the pitch to secure funding for the digital elements.

We worked closely with partners in India to develop an understanding of the audience. We used this as a basis for a cross-platform online, social, and mobile strategy to ensure we reached our core audience with our key messaging. I led the pitch to find a local digital partner.

I developed complex Theory of Change models for our NGO funding partners to illustrate the ROI of our digital and social media strategy and how this could deliver on key metrics such as increasing awareness around HIV and increasing footfall to clinics and sexual education centres.

This was one of the most challenging assignments I have ever had, but I loved every minute of it. We delivered against all our goals and created work of real value. Please take a look at testimonials on my profile.
