Twelve Things You Didn’t Know About Private Capital #1
DID you know that the roots of Britain’s world-leading position in venture capital and private equity can be traced back to one of the worst financial crises in history?
While the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the industry we now know was born out of the global economic collapse triggered by the Wall Street Crash in 1929.Following the crash, The MacMillan Committee was formed by the government and the members were an interesting and varied mix of people including Ernest Bevin (Trade Unionist and Labour politician), eminent economist and philosopher John Maynard Keynes as well as business people and politicians from all parties.
It recommended policies such as nationalisation of the Bank of England and government regulation of international trade, but arguably one the key actions coming out of it was the formation of the Industrial and Commercial Finance Corporation (ICFC).This company was formed and funded by the Bank of England and British banks to provide funding for SMEs who were too small for the stock market and too risky for banks to lend to. The Finance Corporation for Industry was founded in the same year and the two merged in 1973.Ten years later it was renamed Investors IN Industry or 3i as we know it today, a FTSE 100 stock market investment business.
Many of the senior people in the private capital industry today have links with 3i in some form or another. Trace our roots back far enough and at it’s core you will find Labour, Liberal and Conservative politicians, trade unionists, economists and of course business people who were struggling to find finance to run their businesses. So the next time someone tells you that private equity is all about big business, wealthy people becoming wealthier and pure self-interest, you can tell them what it really is about!
