November 11, 2023, Remembrance Day Reflections   It was a long day. As always, while remembering the sacrifices of those who bravely served and gave their lives to protect our freedoms, I think of my father, mentor, hero and inspiration, Sergeant Joe Segal, who bravely served for 2 1/2 years overseas in WWII with the Calgary Highlanders.  He took part in the liberation of Holland and finished off in Germany at the end of the war.     Hard to believe that it has been 18 months since my dad passed away on May 31st last year. Like many others who have fought in wars, my dad was reluctant to talk about his war time experiences until he was into his 80’s. Obviously, he saw many terrible things, lost many of his fellow soldiers and friends in the fighting, while having many close calls himself.   My father was a man who was born with a clear moral compass, naturally knowing good from evil, right from wrong, and always standing up and fighting to uphold those beliefs. In WWII those battle lines were blatantly clear, especially with the extent of the Nazi horrors that came to light at the end of the war. My dad’s wartime experience – the army, the battles, the horrors, the sadness, and the life lessons – had a profound impact on my dad, helping shape the extraordinarily inspiring life he led from there. One of those things that my father never forgot was the Antisemitism my father encountered not just in Germany, but also from a soldier in his own battalion.     If my father were here today, almost 80 years now removed from WWII, I know how troubled, saddened, disturbed and angry he would feel about the horrific October 7th, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks and hostage taking that took place, and about the extreme Antisemitic celebrations that took place immediately following, even before any Israeli retaliation took place, and which have only been expanding in breadth, depth and hostility ever since. #remember #whenwillwelearn

As today we again mark the sacrifices of those who bravely have served and given their lives to protect our freedoms, this Remembrance Day 2022 is particularly poignant for me. My father, mentor, hero and inspiration, Sergeant Joe Segal, bravely served for 2 1/2 years overseas in WWII with the Calgary Highlanders and took part in the liberation of Holland. Sadly, he passed away on May 31st this year; a man who never rested from duty a day in his long life of 97.5 years, he was put to final rest, mourned and paid tribute to by countless people he impacted throughout his life. A man who loved life and cared deeply about family, community and country; a man who never wasted a minute of every cherished day he was blessed with on this earth; a man who was born knowing what is right, fighting for what is right, and always doing the right thing. Though a huge void has been created in my life, I do take comfort in the vast store of memories that I draw on from decades of up-close daily interactions with my father during my adult working years. RIP Dad/Sergeant Joe Segal.🫡
