Have you ever thought about the hidden costs of technology? In the story of human progress, technological breakthroughs have always been celebrated as milestones of progress. They make our life easier, give us new experiences and boosts productivity. But, as we embrace new inventions, we need to remember that they can also take something away from us.
Let's take a quick look at some important tech milestones:
Calculators: They made math easy but reduced our mental math skills.
Computers: They improved data processing but sometimes made us spend too much time in front of screens.
Internet & Social media: It connected us globally but blurred the lines between fact and fiction.
Smartphones: It made everything convenient for us but reduced our social interactions and disrupted the work-life balance.
Globalization: It opened up markets but made economies dependent on each other and vulnerable to shocks.
Processed Food: It increased the shelf life of food and saved time to cook but caused lifestyle & health problems.
The common thread here is that technology has enriched our lives but at the same time took away a little bit from us and that too permanently.
Now, let's talk about the future and Generative AI which promises another leap of technological evolution. These intelligent systems can create content, art, and even assist in problem-solving, amplify our learning and boost our productivity and creativity. While I myself am very excited about it and exploring it on daily basis, but we should be careful.
Will the art generated by AI give us the same essence of creative pleasure when we make it by hand? Will the code generated by AI give us the same satisfaction & confidence when we build something robust & valuable? Will the problem-solving and automation done via generative AI make us completely dependent on it and eventually destroy our curiosity and fundamentally change how we think & learn by practice and hard work.
What might it mean for our culture and society? In our pursuit of technological advancement, how can we safeguard the aspects of our human qualities that make us unique? In the case of Generative AI, I think it's not the jobs that will be impacted but probably our creativity, grit in learning and ability to build something from scratch. What do you think?
