As a startup CTO, one of the biggest challenges is keeping your team motivated and driven towards success. Recently, I had a conversation with a friend (founder and CTO at a series B funded startup) who was struggling with this exact issue. His team had become complacent, and he was finding it difficult to inspire them to fight hard when the organization needed it most.
After some discussion, we identified that his EMs (engineering managers) were the key leverage point to drive expectations down to the rest of the team. The first step we took was to clearly define the responsibilities and expectations of the EMs. We then focused on defining one expectation each week, we will be conducting weekly reviews to ensure progress was being made.
Sometimes all you need is a sounding board to help solve your problems. In this case, I was able to help this friend confirm the things he already knew, which gave him the confidence to move forward with his approach. Remember, as a leader, it's important to identify your leverage points and focus on clear expectations to motivate your team towards success.
