After about three years of trying to secure a collaboration meeting with a government agency, they finally invited our leadership team for a get-to-know-you session. Half of their team seemed on our side, but their body language otherwise made it clear they weren't convinced yet. They asked us to explain (again) what it is that we do at the Nigerian Center.
I responded by explaining our work, stressing that the idea of a welcoming center like ours is a practice across most immigrant groups in the country. Seeing that I was apparently hitting a wall, our program director chimed in with, "If I may." She said, "Let me tell you my story if it will help."
"I came to the US to study at one of the country’s most prestigious schools, finishing with high student debt and no post-graduation support. Not knowing where else to go, a friend suggested I try the Nigerian Center. Through that meeting, they helped me find a residency path in America and qualify for the country’s skilled professionals green card. Then I started with them as a volunteer and worked my way up to the program director. This is what we are about."
