Highlights
Keir Starmer has apparently committed a grave error. He has confirmed that, should he become our next Prime Minster, he will finish work at 6pm on a Friday evening to ensure he has time with his family. According to a recent social media post by the Conservatives, this will make him a 'part time' PM.
First of all, finishing at 6pm isn't anyone's definition of part time work. Suggesting that it is, with an undertone that infers this is a dereliction of duty, is #flexshaming. Actual part time workers do not care less, and are not less motivated or committed to their roles because they are not full time.
There is nothing noble in overwork, or having a poor work life balance. It does not lead to greater productivity or better decision making, or improved leadership. If anything, it can result in the opposite.
We need leaders to be role models. To set the tone that having a work life balance is a good thing. That rest and recovery from work is a good thing - a useful thing. To encourage others through their words and behaviour to do the same.
Any organisation that cannot cope if its leader is momentarily unavailable is a poorly run one.
