The Great Dictator.
86 years later Charlie Chaplin's satire of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party is as poignant today as it was on its release in 1940. In particular the final speech in his film still resonates today, more than ever. (Linked Below)
The speech addresses the issues of dictatorship, greed, corruption and the power of propaganda, with a message of peace, love and equality.
Chaplin had been working on the film idea during the 1930's and began production in 1939. He funded, directed and wrote the script for what is considered his greatest film. As well as the first time the lovable 'clown', known for his silent comedy films, was heard to speak on the big screen.
A political satire of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, it was banned in all the countries occupied by Germany, as well as a number of Latin American countries sympathetic to the Nazi Party.
In a world of uncertainty, division, war, extremism, and a growing right wing movement across Europe and The USA fuelled by propaganda, Chaplin's speech is a reminder of how democracy is broken when the way people vote is controlled by miss-information and hate.
