Missing Context in Product Decisions? Experience Maps Can Help
We kept running into the same issues: constantly changing requirements late in the process, long discussions full of opinions, and decisions ultimately made by the HiPPO (Highest Paid Person's Opinion). Sound familiar?
We decided to try experience maps to address this, and we could see the difference after the first iteration. Our discussions became more focused, more meaningful, and started happening much earlier in the process.
Key takeaways from our journey:
- It's about the user's journey, not your product
- Individual input first, then group discussion (bye-bye, groupthink)
- Visual storytelling beats long-winded explanations every time
Curious about how we did it? I've written an article breaking down our approach, including a Miro template to get you started.

If you're interested in diving deeper into Experience Maps, I highly recommend checking out Teresa Torres' "Continuous Discovery Habits". We combined it with the Jobs-to-be-done framework by Bob Moesta which made structuring the synthesised map a lot easier.
What's your experience with aligning product decisions? Any tricks up your sleeve?
