Highlights
I had a great conversation with Craig Picken on his Aerospace Executive podcast sharing highlights from my book coming out next month: "High-Trust Leadership: Building High Performance Teams." Thanks for the invitation, Craig!
My father served in the Navy during World War II, participating in amphibious landings in Africa, Italy, and islands in the Pacific. He was a member of America's greatest generation. They answered the call to defend democracy and freedom from fascism by serving overseas under arduous and dangerous conditions for years at a time, many losing their lives so we can enjoy the freedom and prosperity we often take for granted. For a glimpse of what the alternative could have been, take a look at what life is like in Iran, Russia, and other countries under autocratic rule by dictators. When I asked my father not only why he volunteered to join the Navy, but upon returning from fighting in the Mediterranean he volunteered to be deployed for combat in the Pacific. He replied, "Because I never wanted anyone to say I didn't do my part."
During my Navy career, I lost shipmates in combat and peacetime training. Each loss was tragic. But we all knew the risks and did our best to mitigate them through study, hard work, realistic training, and no small amount of optimism required when going into harm's way. In the final analysis, we judged the risks required for a strong, effective, professional military were necessary to preserve our way of life and help make tomorrow a better day for all.
The question ringing on this Memorial Day holiday is, "What are you doing to be worthy of the ultimate sacrifice made by the hundreds of thousands of men, women, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters on your behalf?"
Today we honor members of the military. But everyone can serve in some way and help overcome the extreme polarization and tribalism that is giving comfort to our enemies and preventing us from collectively solving our most pressing problems. Being a good citizen carries the responsibility to help make a positive difference in ways large and small.
2024 is a critical year for our country. The memories of all the fallen are on us. Are you doing your part?
