Last week, I wrote about quantum computing in South Korea 🇰🇷 , and this week, I will speak about India 🇮🇳 ...some of you know how much "Bharatavarsha" (sanskrit name of India) is dear to my heart.

As many other governments around the world, India has a quantum computing plan (called the National Quantum Mission, NQM in short).

According to the Department of Science & Technology, the Union Cabinet approved the National Quantum Mission (NQM) on 19th April 2023 at a total cost of Rs.6003.65 crore (around 750 m$) from 2024 to 2031. The Mission objectives include developing intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50-1000 physical qubits in 8 years in various platforms, like superconducting and photonic technology (they did not mention neutral atoms, but are definitely working on it!)

Impressive figures, clear objectives, but the most important question is 'how'. That is where India has an edge : Incredible talent. Since times immemorial.

Quantum computing is a big (and complex) numbers game, and India excels at this since the time of sage Baudhayana Maharishi, who wrote about the Pythagoras theorem 2,800 years ago.... hundreds of years before Pythagoras himself.

1,500 years ago, Brahmagupta introduced the concept and computing methods of zero (0).

A century ago, Satyendra Nath Bose, an Indian theoretical physicist and mathematician, worked on quantum mechanics with Albert Einstein, developing the foundation for Bose–Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose–Einstein condensate.

Thirty years ago, Lov Kumar Grover proposed the Grover database search algorithm used in quantum computing. Grover's 1996 algorithm won renown as the second major algorithm proposed for quantum computing, and in 2017 was finally implemented in a scalable physical quantum system.

These big names are only a few majestic trees within a dense forest- Many world-class researchers from India are already working for top quantum companies all over the world, including my company.

One thing is for sure : India will have no shortage of talent - the country can count on the largest community of quantum experts, both domestic and abroad.

After all, it is only logical than the world's most populous country, with a GDP growth rate of 7% in 2024, and thousands of years of experience handling big and complex numbers, will soon join Europe, China, U.S, Japan and Korea in the global race towards quantum computing usefulness.

The world needs the power of "Mother Bharatavarsha" to turn the quantum dream into a concrete reality. 🙏

I am looking forward to collaborating even more in the near future with India talents and companies.

South Korea : the next quantum powerhouse ?

During a speech in January, South Korea president Yoon Seok-Yeol reminded the audience about the sheer size of the Korean quantum initiative : 3 trillion won ($ 2.3 billion) and 10,000 jobs created in the next years.

It is very comparable in numbers with the public investment of many E.U countries. Besides, Korea can count on the formidable alliance between the government and large conglomerates such as Samsung Electronics or LG Electronics, which turned the country into an IT leader in less than two decades.

The cold war like situation with North Korea poses specific threats that stimulate the emergence of a thriving quantum industry - particularly for quantum secured communications, cryptography, or military assets deployment optimisation.

What was lacking so far was the emergence of national, 100% Korean champions- the recent announcement of SDT Inc. Inc. regarding the construction of a set of quantum computers can be seen as the beginning of an expected catch-up with countries such as France, Germany and the U.K. Mark my words, there will be others soon.

The global quantum market, which seems to be a thing between US, Europe and Japan (I exclude China because nobody really knows what's up there), may well include the "land of the morning calm", much earlier than expected.

All major quantum computing companies are or will invest soon in Korea.

All of them will have to take into account the aspiration of Korea to design and build its own quantum machines.

I am looking forward to seeing my wife's motherland pave the way to useful quantum computing, along other nations.
