⚡ The energy in the room this morning at the Sie Ventures + Marriott Harrison ‘From founding team to company culture, how to scale successfully’ event was fantastic. I’ve been an operator in two high-growth start-ups that were #scaling aggressively, and I’ve seen first hand the challenges that such #growth poses for the #culture of the companies themselves.

🤠 There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach to scaling successfully and ensuring that the company culture does not suffer in the process. I’ve seen culture suffer in a team of 40 people that scaled to 80 people, and I’ve seen it in a team of 500 people that scaled to 1000 people in the space of a year.

💡 That being said, there are certainly plenty of useful insights that those of us who have been through such experiences can share. From #investors, to start-up #founders and employees, to employment lawyers, today’s event was filled with constructive conversation and frank anecdotes about some of the #opportunities and #challenges of scaling a start-up.

A few takeaways from the event:

➡️ The need for behavioural KPIs which form your culture as you scale, and the need to take scaling your culture as seriously as scaling your business ➡️ A discussion regarding hiring for work ethic and behaviour versus experience at early stage - and whether or not this bias should change as your company scales  ➡️ A frank conversation about the notion that as the CEO, you may be the ceiling to your own business (this may or may not be true for all businesses and all CEOs, but it is an important question to consider) ➡️ When is it necessary to add in a C-level hire, how long should wait until doing so, and will the C-level hire be prepared to roll up their sleeves? How can you test for this, and whether or not they will be a fit for the culture of your company?

💬 Alongside the panel discussions, there were also a host of brilliant start-up founders at the event. Speaking with entrepreneurs who have a passion for what they are building is one of the privileges of working in venture capital, and it is a real joy to be able to have such conversations in person.

💭 I had a genuinely invigorating morning talking to founders building innovative businesses in a wide range of spaces. From an AI scheduling tool for parents, to a used furniture marketplace and delivery service, to an ecommerce platform for vegan clothing, there were some brilliant ideas, connections and conversations throughout the morning.

💯 I’m a big fan of the work that Marriot Harrison and Sie Ventures are doing, and the events that they put on - and this morning was no exception. It was also a great opportunity to finally meet a few people who I’ve known for some time, but have only spoken to via Zoom. A morning well spent!
