Gerhard Wagner

Professor at Harvard Medical School

Gerhard Wagner is a renowned physicist and structural biologist currently serving as the Elkan Rogers Blout Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School.12 Born in 1945 in Bor, Czech Republic, Wagner grew up in Southern Bavaria and was the first in his family to receive a college education.2

Wagner is considered a pioneer in Biological Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (Bio-NMR).2 His research focuses on:

  1. Protein structure, dynamics, and stability
  2. Eukaryotic translation initiation
  3. Transcriptional activation
  4. Membrane proteins in micelles and nanodiscs
  5. Discovery and characterization of small molecule inhibitors of protein-protein interactions14

Throughout his career, Wagner has made significant contributions to the field:

  • Developed triple-resonance methods for protein assignments while at the University of Michigan (1987-1990)2
  • Improved the design of nanodiscs, synthetic models of cell membranes used to study proteins controlling cellular entry and exit2
  • Co-founded PIC Therapeutics, focusing on developing small molecule inhibitors of protein-protein interactions4

Wagner has received numerous honors and is an elected fellow of several prestigious scientific organizations, including:

  • American Association for the Advancement of Science
  • German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
  • American Academy of Arts and Sciences
  • National Academy of Sciences
  • International Society of Magnetic Resonance2

His educational background includes a diploma in Physics from the Technical University Munich and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from ETH Zürich in 1977.13
