A big question I've been asking recently is: "What do I want to be valued for?"
My TL;DR thinking is:
- Step one is answer this 👆 honestly (not as easy as it appears)
- Step two is to find the society/community that rewards you for that value
San Francisco is (arguably) still the best place in the world when it comes to building companies. Why? It's where the money is. It has the highest concentration of talent. But most importantly: the traits that are valued in this community (creativity, audacity and grit for example), are aligned with the things that make you more likely to be a successful company builder.
On a very primal level, we're programmed to fit in and be liked / valued by the community we're in. This means that groups with different value systems, create different incentives. Different incentives lead to different outcomes.
So if you want to be a singer, San Fransisco (or equivalent) probably isn't it. But if you want to push the boundaries and build cool stuff, it probably is.
📸 A society/community that values image = the more likely you are to care about what you wear, who you're seen with 📚 A society/community that values intellect = the more likely you are to educate yourself and keep learning 🏋️♀️ A society/community that values health = the more likely you are to eat well and take care of yourself
None of the above are necessarily good/bad. They are just different value systems.
And while you do find people breaking the societal norm, it's far easier when you're surrounded by people who value the same things you do. So when it comes to what communities you opt in to, make sure that's the value system you want to adopt, because you probably will.
