Buying and selling firecrackers for a 10-15x multiple.

That’s how my entrepreneurial journey started when I was 14 years old.

I wish I could say it was because of some inspiring conversation with a mentor or relative. But it was not.

I didn’t know anyone who was an entrepreneur. Everyone around me was just trying to get a salary and have stability, and I had no clue how to get started. Also everyone thought I am insane leaving a software job for this experience.

So I started my official career writing code — I was good at it and I worked hard so became successful quickly. I was always hungry and had something to prove, and my bosses could tell that from a mile away.

From there - I had a plan of coming to the US. Step by step I made it happen, and after arriving here, I transitioned to product, then marketing, sales, and eventually started on my own. It was the safest most gradual transition and I wasted lots of years setting backups for myself in case I failed.

Today I realized it was just my poor man’s attitude who had me play safe, while I could have started at least a decade prior, and that’s what I tell folks when they ask me when to start (aka now).

Eventually started working with clients and built Metadata.

Entrepreneurship is never an obvious or easy path – you simply have to get started and make progress from there.

That’s why my first piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to get started.

Stop overthinking. Other people’s templates are theirs. The earlier you start making mistakes, the sooner you'll make progress.

Silicon Valley created a whole new ecosystem of startups.

  • You raise a lot of money.
  • Make a lot of costly mistakes.
  • Hopefully find product market fit.
  • Scale (in)efficiently all the way to the exit.

You can essentially ignore major issues about your business because you are growing and have funds to continue.

It’s only when they get acquired by strategic or PE that they start fixing their unit economics and business models.

But companies that are bootstrapped have 0% luxury to do that – they have to figure out everything while being profitable.

I call it the burn muscle  — scrappy and resourceful.

“Let’s find ways to do more with less.”
