Highlights
I am excited for this next chapter (which actually started last September) as a part of Kraken Digital Asset Exchange! I get to connect the dots (or nodes!) with my first venture into peer-to-peer over a decade ago, while still pushing for better financial empowerment of people around the world.
Somehow this move has its roots in my first venture, Vuze, which pioneered building decentralized applications on another peer-to-peer protocol, BitTorrent. Vuze was also about freedom of expression, independent media distribution, and fighting the good fight against cable operators in front of the FCC for fair network practices.
Over the last 10 years or so, I have been dabbing into crypto focusing on user-adoption, and monitoring progress in some keys areas: Scalability of protocols (driving transaction cost and energy footprint down); Reducing user friction at onboarding; Developing effective regulatory frameworks (EU), or lack thereof (US). All of these advanced significantly during the last crypto bull run, and now is a great time to further push crypto into the mainstream.
At N26, I realized the impact we could have by building great user experiences atop of a reinvented banking tech architecture. That said, neobanks are still tethered to the same archaic plumbing interconnecting the existing financial system (tradfi). This creates a glass ceiling on innovation, user experience, and societal benefits, esp in countries with poor financial systems and policies.
Building great products in a regulated industry is a constant balancing exercise between user experience, business outcomes, geography-specific compliance requirements, and local market conditions. We spent the last 3 months creating a combined Product and Operations organization, integrating all product domains and business lines, strategy, business and geo-expansion, and all global operations.
Empowering people with control over their finances, more ways to pay and move money, and build wealth is what crypto is about. That's also Kraken's mission to build the best bridge to move your financial world over to a decentralized place where you fully control it, and then give you the tools to manage and grow your finances.
I'm super excited to partner with David Ripley and the entire Kraken team to contribute to the mission and build the best crypto exchange and trading experience, accelerate the adoption of crypto, and help people achieve financial freedom and inclusion.

News (Part 1)
Today, I shared with the N26 team that I will be stepping out of my role as Chief Product Officer later this month. I will be pursuing a different opportunity, on which I will share more about shortly in a separate post. However, this is also not the end of my N26 journey, as I’m excited to be joining N26's Supervisory Board, and supporting the company's mission from this new perspective.
I wanted to thank Valentin and Maximilian for bringing me onboard on a journey that has been incredibly rewarding. From day one, I chose to focus on people, investing in and supporting the Product, UX, and Tech organisation, its leadership, its ways-of-working and growing its culture. Today, N26 has a resilient product-led culture, which in turns delivers what I consider a best-in-class product, loved by millions. With every release, N26 goes above and beyond what you would expect from a "neobank", and is increasingly reinventing the primary bank experience: manage your income, save with interests, invest with crypto, get credit, all of it from a single app with a delightful user experience. N26 also became increasingly more convenient and locally relevant in each market (Bizum in Spain, French IBANs, Ideal in the Netherlands to name a few).
But that's only the part of the product that customers see. Under the surface, we automated tons of processes, drove AI into anti-financial crime prevention, resulting in massive efficiencies, and increasing the levels of security and standards of regulatory compliance in all markets.
None of this happens by luck, or because a CPO reviews every pixel that goes out. This approach doesn't work with 50+ squads, no matter how good your product sense is. The team, and its culture is what makes this possible, and that's what I'm the most proud of. Together, we iterated on org design, leveling across the different skillsets (product, UX, data, ops) and bringing new skills from the banking world into the team. We improved every product lifecycle process, every product team ceremony, every existing way-of-working, inch by inch, to strengthen the culture, and invest it back into N26’s mission.
It takes a village to build a great product. Today, N26 is thriving at doing just that.
Some N26 villagers I would like to thank for consistently making my day, and kicking ass at what they do: Gino, Arnd, Timo, Jan, Anke, Sarah, Carine, my ELT partners in crime; Janis Bode, Jennifer, Will, Arjun, Kristen, Olaf, Bastiaan, Stephan, Volker, Angel, Daria and the Product, Tech and UX leadership teams; Ausra, Arno, Jeremie, Andrea, Daniel, Crystal, Chris, Sabrina and I am definitely missing some.
I am also looking forward to continuing the work with the rest of the Supervisory Board Marcus W. Mosen, Déborah Carlson-Burkart, Barbara Roth, Julian Deutz, Joerg Gerbig
