Director, HIV Prevention Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council

Gita Ramjee is an internationally renowned scientist with a lifetime achievement award in HIV prevention research. She is notably the only scientist to have led multiple large trials in HIV prevention among women worldwide.

Her expertise lies in multidisciplinary research, covering basic, behavioral, clinical, and community-based interventions in mid-income countries, particularly in South Africa.

As a director of a large multidisciplinary research unit, Gita possesses extensive skills and knowledge in program management, including human resources, finance, quality control, community relations, and laboratory and clinical management.

She excels in developing short and long-term strategic research plans aligning with organizational goals and vision, showcasing exceptional communication skills with over 150 published scientific journal articles to her credit.

Gita Ramjee has also served in prestigious roles such as Director and Chief Specialist Scientist at the HIV Prevention Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council, Clinical Professor at the Department of Global Health in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington, and Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.

Her previous positions include Senior Specialist Scientist, Acting Director, and Division Head roles at the South African Medical Research Council.
