"Cybercrime" is a broad term which simply means a crime was committed using information technology. In some foreign governments this terminology is being misused to justify censorship. Prosecutors in the US can charge some offenders for not just the crime itself, but also a "cybercrime" if a computer was involved. While certainly laws must adapt to recent technologies, this is an example of where deep subject matter expertise, agreeing on a clear set of goals, and a careful evaluation of unintended consequences is needed before implementing policy or regulations.
With gratitude I am now leaving Microsoft. Most of my career has been in healthcare IT. After needing a change in scenery, I began security consulting in 2014 for Microsoft thanks to a guy named Carl Greninger. I had the blessing of working with some very smart people in Surface who gave me the flexibility and support to spearhead security projects that are still paying dividends today across not just Surface but every hardware division. Then, seven years ago, I joined Microsoft as an FTE in the tiny Windows Trusted Root Program (PKI) team comprising at the time of just one person. The charter of the team was massive; PKI governance on a global scale impacting every piece of software and every web connection on every Windows device. It was a challenge that I ambitiously took on. The team eventually grew, and I had access to the smartest minds in the PKI industry. Since that time, through working with numerous colleagues that I call friends both inside and outside Microsoft and spanning the globe, I can say that we positively impacted not only every Microsoft customer but the entire Internet. I had an opportunity in my career to make an impact on this world that few have. With gratitude I am off to a new adventure. To all of you who I have worked with, “Thank You”, it has been a fantastic ride!
