Within five minutes of saying goodbye to my daughter as she ran to catch the bus, I got a text saying that she had been involved in an accident – someone ran a stop sign, hit the side of the bus, then left the scene of the accident. My daughter was fine but the only other student on board was sitting right where the car rammed the bus and ended up in the hospital. Today I am grateful for the health and safety of my daughter.
I was laid off from my job one year ago, after 20+ years with my former employer. It was a bit of a shock, I won’t lie, but I haven’t regretted it. First of all, there’s not much I could have done about it – they made it clear that it was not a performance related decision. Secondly, I am a positive-minded person. I know that a new adventure is waiting for me, but it will require patience and work. So, each day I review job postings, write cover letters, and wait to hear back. It can be a daunting, discouraging process. But focusing on things I’m grateful for has helped me a lot.
After all, if I had not been laid off, I would not have had the time to digitize my Great Uncle’s high school diary from the 1940’s or his memoirs from World War II. I would not have been able to spend a week out of state with my mother-in-law to keep her company as she passed on from this world. And I would not have experienced the heart-warming moment when my teenage daughter told me that she had the best summer of her life because I was home with her. I never could have predicted those priceless silver linings when I became unemployed last January, and I am beyond grateful for each of them.
Each day I hear about more corporate layoffs. I see more “open to work” banners on the photos of my contacts. I know that people are distressed and unsure of the future. And I hope my personal journey can offer a helpful perspective. I’m wishing each of you the best of luck in your job search, and many silver linings along the way!
