To me, very few organizations reflect Singapore as much as SATS Ltd. does. And on Singapore's 59th National Day, I wanted to highlight one of the nation's most valuable yet humble corporations.
🐣 It was founded only 51 years ago, in 1972, at that time to manage a small airport.
🛫 Today, they manage 80% of Changi Airport's (the world's best airport for consecutive years) cargo handling and food solutions. Not an easy feat! 🙉
🌍 In 2022, they acquired the world's largest air cargo handler Worldwide Flight Services for $1.64 billion. 😮
🌳 They started their sustainability journey >8 years ago, and now launched their 1st Sustainability Report post WFS-acquisition, in record time! ⏰
📖 Unravel Carbon was selected to be their carbon management platform partner in Dec 2023, and within 5 months from onboarding, measurement + analysis results were approved and published. Link in comments

One of my favourite quotes was shared by a Malaysian Minister last week...
Last week, Unravel Carbon was in KL to participate in Eco-Business's Unlocking Capital for Sustainability, a 1 in 6 part of a regional event series this year.
Tobias (Toby) Berger and I were impressed by the quality of content and people that Jessica Cheam and her team put together, from a well-executed debate on whether the carbon markets in Msia should be guided by regulators or by the free market, to panels on SMEs. We were most impressed by Malaysia's Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Every meeting we had in KL, everyone had positive things to say about him and his policies).
Some of the points he covered:
😪 As a region, despite some positive strides, no one country is on track to meet our 2030 reduction goals. In fact, it will take another 32 years (vs 6 years that we have) for our region to achieve what we said we would😖
🌎 As a country, Msia is working on a few areas:
- 🛢 70% of their energy capacity will be from renewables by 2050
- 🤼 A national decarbonization committee has been formed
- 📃 A bill on CCUS is tabled for Parliament by end of this year
- 🌳 A climate change bill embodiment to be tabled for Parliament next year
- 👨🌾 There will no more new coal plants allowed, and a complete phasing out of coal by 2044
- 💸 SMEs are the backbone of the economy, and yet, banks have traditionally made it hard for them to access green financing (but that's changing fast). Many programs and tools have been made accessible, and more can be done.
He ended by saying that for decades, companies and countries have solely focused on 🖤 'being in the black', but that we need to 'be in the green' 💚.
He then shared the powerful (and oh, so true) quote by Gus Speth, the founder and former president of the World Resources Institute, and a Senior Advisor to Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, who said:
"I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystems collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy… and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation and we, lawyers and scientists, don´t know how to do that.” 🚀 🚀 🚀
I do think our customers and partners in Malaysia know a thing or two, though! It was nice to spend some quality time with them, as well as new customers to be!
