Highlights
Delayed post but have been loving serving as VP of Revenue at Beyond Menu. Inspired daily by our restaurant customers and the global team that supports them.
On October 29, 2012 Superstorm Sandy hit just north of Atlantic City. The most tragic part of the storm was the loss of life that killed hundreds, but millions more were impacted. In NYC there was a massive storm surge that flooded everything downtown...it took out Wall Street, Staten Island. Brooklyn (especially Red Hook) got crushed. The Battery Tunnel was a river. I was working on Adam Liebman's sales team at SinglePlatform at the time and our office was directly across from Battery Park staring down the Statue of Liberty. Our subbasement flooded with 30 feet of salt water and that was that for a lot of livelihoods that were made in that building. Our SP team was immensely fortunate to have had a life line in that moment.
I'm getting some of the details wrong and missing key people but six months prior Gail Goodman, Joel Hughes and their teams at Constant Contact had read a Forbes article about Wiley Cerilli and the sales machine he was building. They reached out to Kenny Herman and went on to acquire the company in June. At the time it was one of the largest acquisitions of a tech company in NYC history and it was a huge win for our team, our investors and the post dot-com bust comeback in Silicon Alley. So there's CTCT who've just invested $100MM into this team down in NYC, month four post ACQ; has a workforce that can't get into their totaled office, and we're so early and five years before Aircall or any tool that let's you remotely serve your customers.
So what do you do? First thing, you need Peter Chen as your COO who walks over to the office daily waiting for the floods to recede. Then you ask your team to walk up 11 flights of stairs with flashlights to pull all your servers and everything you need to help your customers and you start getting to work in one another's apartments. Then you have the facilities teams at CTCT get you space when half of downtown is also hunting.
I will never forget what it felt like to walk into 110 Broadway on our first day back. We took over a space from some media company that had failed and that space transformed our team. When you're early you work wherever...you make cold calls from utility closets, you hold Product meetings in the hall by the bathroom, you're scaling so fast you're taking space on different floors in your building. It's so effing loud. Our new space was massive and we could all be together. And we all pulled together. We started the machine back up. We got loud. We got down to Red Hook and walked door to door helping mom and pops tell the world "we're still here." We helped hundreds of businesses and the thousands of livelihoods THEY supported.
I think about that period all the time and wonder what companies didn't make it...who didn't have a Gail or Wiley to make sure their teams and customers were going to be ok. And I think about how we all came out of that stronger and better and with higher standards. Can't sink a rocketship. #SPLove #MSH #sales #team #tech #startups
