I just finished a very small Q&A session at VMworld 2016 with Alan Renouf, a member of Team VMware. Alan works on the PowerCLI and APIs for the company. What a great guy. His job is to make it possible for automators like me to do our jobs. Our requests for enhancements and bug fixes become reality through the efforts of Alan.

VMware's virtual volumes are a great step toward reducing the complexity that a vSphere admin faces when trying to request storage tuned to a particular application or workload. Vvols come with a new interface that makes it easy for vSphere admins and storage admins to communicate through. However, there is still a requirement for three things:

  1. A storage admin that knows what what (s)he is doing
  2. A vSphere or OS admin that understands storage performance requirements
  3. App developers that know how their system interacts with the disk OR are willing to create repeatable workloads so the OS, vSphere, and storage admins can collect metrics and pick the best settings for the application
