Last week I vetted over 180 applicants for a development position at our company. That was after only 2 days of having the posting live.

Two things shocked me with this - the first is how many people are searching/applying right now (I now have another 200 applicants to vet 3 days later). The second is how few "put in the effort". Simply by asking 4 simple questions over 50% of the applicants were eliminated because they didn't answer at all. Another 25% were eliminated because they didn't meet the clearly written criteria in the posting. It was only the last 25% that I even needed to look at their resume.

If you're in the job market right now, I'd encourage you:

  1. Read the posting and answer their questions and you'll stand above 50% of applicants
  2. Write more than 4-word responses and you'll stand above 75% of applicants
  3. Include a cover letter and you'll stand above 90%+ of applicants

There's a LOT of competition out there right now, but the people who care, and put in the effort are rare.
