How we tested Superlocal at Antler
Previously I wrote that we were accepted into Antler as Superlocal, a neighbourhood food delivery that eliminates all the fees and pays its couriers fairly.
We have figured out that if we group orders to one block of buildings and to one time period one courier will be able to deliver 20-40 orders per hour (which is 10x more than Doordashers do nowadays). This efficiency will allow us to minimise the fees and provide a higher compensation to the couriers
We were looking to validate our idea and needed one or more neighbouring companies with 40 people to order lunches. Needless to say, Antler was the perfect choice with 80+ founders residing on two floors in Midtown Manhattan
What we did as a team:
- Made a vote for top restaurants. Paulina Uspenskaia and Sergey scraped the menus, prices and photos
- Oleg Kulikovskiy and Sarmat Kasaev built a simple app and backend. We published it in TestFlight and sent the link to all testers. Without card payments (just Venmo me), all was done within 1 week.
- Nick Korzhenevsky helped us build the transaction model that would make customer profiles more accurate for future targeting
Now because we didn’t have any integrations with the restaurants Paulina Uspenskaia would manually create order pickups and I’d do all the delivery myself
We launched on Monday. On Thursday:
- We have delivered to 3 companies within one block
- Without bikes - reached the speed of 29 orders per 30 minutes per 1 courier - that’s 58 (!!!) orders per hour
I can’t be more proud of our team. Huge thanks for Antler NYC for doing what accelerator must do - accelerate the product to the market
Shoutouts to guys that ordered, you are fantastic: Jeff Becker, Roslyn Jin, Kaila J. Two months ago me & Paulina Uspenskaia got accepted into Antler with Superlocal.
Superlocal is a neighborhood food delivery that ditches all the fees. Literally no fees, no tipping options, fairly paid couriers and 3x less fees for the restaurant. We do this by optimising delivery times and routes and by using your preferences to personalise offline experience in the neighbourhood, making you - a Superlocal
This is something we did on other markets, but boy did we get to learn so much more about food delivery in NYC that was at times appalling and shocking, but proving that the time is now to change this market.
And then we spent the next two weeks at Antler building the MVP and validating our ideas. Stay tuned
