Gregory Sachs serves as the Chief Operations Officer of EmPower, a leading company in renewable energy solutions. As a licensed Professional Engineer in New York State, Greg has a pivotal role in overseeing and sealing all designs related to electrical interconnection and structural integrity. NASA Experience

Highlighting his extraordinary career, Greg was selected as an ‘astronaut-like’ candidate for NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog program. In January 2018, he commanded a two-month simulated space mission at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. This experience is not only a testament to his leadership skills but also significantly contributes to current and future NASA missions, including objectives related to Mars exploration, the International Space Station, and lunar bases. Such high-level contributions reflect Greg’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in space exploration and technology.

Academic Contributions

Before his tenure at EmPower, Greg lent his expertise to the US Merchant Marine Academy, where he imparted knowledge in both electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines. During his time at the academy, he co-founded and managed the Alternative Power Program and played an instrumental role in establishing the Kings Point Sustainability Association, demonstrating his commitment to promoting sustainable practices within engineering education.

Greg’s educational journey is marked by his graduation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1999, followed by his completion of Navy Nuclear Power School, where he honed his skills as a nuclear engineer. He later pursued further academic excellence by earning a Master of Science in Systems Engineering and Management from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Sloan School of Management. His thesis focused on designing and developing 'impossibly complex' systems, with an emphasis on electricity grids and smart grid architectures that bolster the deployment of renewable energy resources.

Professional Affiliations and Certifications

Outside of his immediate responsibilities, Greg has been notably involved in various professional organizations. He served as co-chair for the IEEE Long Island Power and Energy Society and took on the role of Secretary/Chair for the Technical Committee of the Long Island Solar Energy Industries Association (LISEIA). His recognized expertise in the field has also made him a NABCEP Certified Photovoltaic Installer, allowing him to contribute to best practices in solar energy installations.

In addition to his leadership and operational roles, Greg actively moderates and lectures on renewable energy topics, contributing to forums held by respected organizations including the NSPE, IEEE Power and Energy Society, SUNY Stony Brook, the Nassau Bar Association, and various universities.
