Happy Mother’s Day to all moms, working moms, and especially clinician moms out there who tirelessly care for their families and their patients. Hope you all enjoy a restorative day!
I have previously mentioned how lack of flexibility is a top issue driving nurses to leave the profession. According to McKinsey & Company data, 45% of current or previously retired nurses cite the ability to set their schedule as a key factor that would bring them back into the profession. This is especially true for nurses whose other role is ‘Mom’. Burnout in the healthcare industry disproportionately affects women, who have fewer opportunities to work remotely, and feel greater pressure to prioritize work over family.
What happens when we give nurses the flexibility they need?
When Henry Ford Health and @Northwestern Memorial Hospital focused on outreach to nurses who left the workforce during the pandemic, they offered them internal travel programs, weekend-only options, and innovative models such as virtual nursing. As a result, they saw about 25% of them return to the organization.
We must evaluate how to encourage women in healthcare to stay in the workforce and explore the ways we can uplift them.
