I was rushing to the office from a discussion on sustainability. During the meeting, most participants were of the opinion that we have to sensitive businesses to adopt sustainable business practices and bring their attention to environmental protection. As I stepped into my office on an unusually cold day in Dhaka, I saw this ragged bag on my table. Hesitantly, I took a closer look into it and saw that it was from the TEAM group, one of Bangladesh's most respected business conglomerates. The slogans Reduce, Reuse, Repeat, and Recycle immediately grabbed my attention. Opening the box, I could see the calendar, diary, sachets of seeds and inspiring greeting cards where the focus was on sustainability and resilience and, most importantly, the message “Let’s walk the talk”. All the papers used were the recycled ones. These also have seeds in them. There was an appeal to use the seeds as a gesture of return to Mother Earth. Seeing all this reinforced my belief that if anyone can save the world from the environmental crisis, it should be the private sector. If anyone knows how to do it, it is them. All states, think tanks and multilateral institutes have to do is create a conducive environment for responsible businesses to start and flourish in an economy. Like TEAMS group, Bangladesh has 200 green factories (LEED certified). 13 out of 15 top LEED factories worldwide are located in Bangladesh. Most of these factory owners understand that sustainability is a way to earn profit in the long term. They chose the option “BETTER LATE THAN NEVER”, challenging the popular notion that businesses are only for profit.
