Have you ever been caught in a rip current?

You're enjoying the beach and sun, life feels good, and then everything changes.

The rip current pulls you away from the shore. You summon all of your energy to swim back, fighting against the current.

But you're stuck.

You panic, swim even more furiously, and get nowhere. This is how people drown.

And it's how grief can feel.

The loss of someone -- or a job, relationship, etc. -- can occur without warning. All your plans of a smooth, easy life go out the window.

But you can navigate rip currents.

You can swim parallel to the beach and move outside of the current's flow. Or relax, tread water, and let the current pull you out until it loses its strength.

Rip currents are scary. Loss (and the grief that accompanies it) is scary. But you have choices available.

You can choose to not fight against the pain -- a losing battle. You can slow down, calm your nerves, and allow the natural cycles (and forces) of life to pull you where it needs to.

As a culture, I believe that we prioritize the fight, the resilience, yet don't give enough emphasis to (or allow for) acceptance and surrender. To accept and surrender is not to give up; instead, it demonstrates the courage necessary to truly face the unpredictable circumstances of life.
