As someone who has written about workplace and career topics longer than I care to admit, I should know the importance of taking vacations. A pile of research studies shows how taking breaks helps us be more productive and creative.

But I still don’t do it very often.

In recent years, my “vacations” have been frenetic weekend trips to track meets and basketball and soccer tournaments to watch my daughter compete, always with my laptop in tow. As an independent professional, it's tough for me to truly disconnect. Client service is so important to the relationships I’ve built.

However, my family and I just returned from a trip to Arizona, and this time was different.

I didn’t take my laptop. I didn’t check my email. I (mostly) disconnected and was present for my family and to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings.

A funny thing happened upon my return. Despite our late arrival from the airport on Sunday and a swirl of eldercare tasks I have faced since we got back, I feel rested and have been getting more done in less time. My focus is sharper. And I have renewed appreciation and gratitude for this work I love.

Lesson re-learned: Taking breaks is essential for wellbeing and for being at my best for my clients. (Also, seeing the Grand Canyon borders on a spiritual experience. We are so lucky to live on this amazing planet.)

Did you take a vacation this summer? Did you notice any residual effects? I'd love to hear about your experience.

I'm so pleased to have been asked to moderate a panel at the 2024 American Society of Journalists and Authors conference on how writers can add content strategy to their services.

I've been involved with ASJA in some way for quite some time. It's always energizing to share ideas with other writers and editors. I hope to see you there!
