🇿🇼 Last week my time at Froggy Farm in Zimbabwe came to an end. Another beautiful experience for which I am very grateful.
🌸 At this small farm they grow beautiful flowers, mainly proteas, for the export (The Netherlands) and local market. Next to that, they also grow organic fruit & vegetables for their own farm café, farm store and the local market. 🍓🥬🍅
👩🏾🌾🧑🏽🌾 Besides learning a lot about farming, which I absolutely love, I’m mostly humbled and impressed by all the beautifully people that cross my path during this journey. People that may, in my western thinking, possess little, but are so joyful, caring and kind. It puts a lot of things into perspective and I’ll go definitely home ‘richer’ after meeting them and hearing all their stories.

After my last week’s post I received a lot of enthusiastic messages about my sabbatical plans in Southern Africa! People are curious and want to know more! So here it is, I’ll elaborate a little bit on the sometimes heartbreaking situation that is still present in South-Africa. A country that is seen by a lot of Dutch people as a lovely holiday destination, but believe me, even though it is ‘officially’ not a Third World country anymore, the conditions can be shocking. To end on a good note, I’ll tell you what Mouton Citrus and the Mouton Foundation are doing to tackle this! 💪🏻
👫🏼 Opportunities for men and women aren’t equal. Since there is often no day care for children, the mothers are ought to stay at home and take care of the children (until the age of 6). Thankfully, here at Mouton, they offer multiple pre-school and after-school facilities that the kids of their staff can make use of every day of the week. In this way, both mom and dad can earn a living, which gives a lot less financial stress. I’ve seen a lot of ladies in leadership positions the last weeks, so it’s great that within this community, both men and women are treated equally.
👧🧒 Unfortunately the stats on children in South-Africa are still worrisom: more than half the children in South Africa continue to live below the poverty line; one third of underaged girls experience some form of violence; two-thirds of children eligible for early childhood development (ECD) programmes do not have access to them. All children of the Mouton Citrus staff can attend the pre-schools and after-schools managed by the Mouton Foundation. This ensures they can learn and play in a safe environment, get used to structure, and get nutritious meals every day. After finishing high school multiple children within the community are eligible for a bursary to continue their studies. In this way, children are empowered to explore their full potential.
🚑 Healthcare is another big topic for the Mouton Foundation. Distances are not the same as back home and it could take people hours and hours to get medical help. The Mouton Foundation gives proper medical help to all staff, including the seasonal staff. They have both a clinic at a set location, as a mobile clinic for all people that don’t own a car. This latter one is a great way of supporting the entire community, including the elderly, who have worked for Mouton in the past, and have retired now but still get the care they need.
🙏🏻 Just as touched about all the great work the Mouton Foundation is doing? You can donate to my fundraiser that I’m organizing! I’ll donate the money to the Foundation this week, so if you are looking for a good cause to donate to, I’ll promise you, your money is well spend here and it will mean a lot to both me and the community.
Baie dankie [thank you very much in Afrikaans]
